Water Tower

Old Rathfriland Reservoir, Altnataggart, Leitrim, Hilltown
The New Water Tower

Water supply to Rathfriland

In 1919 provision of piped water from Altnataggart to the town was completed, and in 1956 the first water tower or tank was built. It proved unsatisfactory in providing water to extinguish a fire in Church Square in 1970. It was 20 ft. square inside with a holding capacity of 25,000 gallons and was 10 ft deep.

The first ‘Firemen’ were Mr Robert Lutton and Mr Frank Morrow who, pre-1939, voluntarily carried out the duties of fire officers with the equipment of:

One standpipe and one key, and two branches supplied by Newry No. 1 Council, stored in the Market House and three separate line firehoses. The present water tower was completed on 9 July 1977.
