Rathfriland National School, School Road

The former Roman Catholic National School is now the premises of 1st Rathfriland Scout Group. It is not clear when it was built, possibly in 1850, but boys and girls were educated separately and entered the building through separate doorways at each end of the building. When Saint Mary’s Primary School was built, this former school became the property of, or was used by Newry No 1 Rural District Council as a store, later probably passing into the ownership of Banbridge District Council. It also housed a pillbox on the corner formed by the back wall of the house which formerly belonged to Tommy Boston of the Back Road. The slits, or embrasures, one on each wall, have been in filled with red brick. Apart from the two outside walls, the pillbox seems to have been demolished and infilled with a coarse sandy type of mixture which caused considerable problems to the Scout Group when constructing the new store extension. The hall was opened by the then Chief Scout on 11th January 1992.
